Minister Michael Mahendere (b. 28 May 1983) is a multi-award winning Zimbabwean gospel artist, songwriter and producer. He began writing songs at seven, recorded his first album at eleven, and has spent every year since refining a sound that is unmistakably his own. With his band Direct Worship he has released ten+ albums including the celebrated Getting Personal With God series and Classical Worship Vol. 3 (2025).
Michael Mahendere was born on 28 May 1983 in Zimbabwe. He began his music career at the age of seven with his brothers in the group Mahendere Brothers, whose debut album Mwari Mukuru (1994) became a chart-topping record across Southern Africa. He went on to teach himself guitar, keyboard and drums, served as Music Director at the University of Zimbabwe, and broke through with the UFI Choir's Makanaka Jesu (2011) which crossed 1.8 million views.
Since 2012, his band Direct Worship has anchored a celebrated catalogue including the Getting Personal With God series (Vol. 1 — 2012, Vol. 2 — 2014, Vol. 3 — 2017 / Live 2019, Vol. 4 — 2021 / Live 2023), Worship Classics (2015), Victory Classical Worship Vol. 2 Live (2019), The SPOW Secret Place of Worship (2020), and Classical Worship Vol. 3 Nziyo Dzedu Live (2025). Singles include Mumoyo, Salt of the Earth, Chiiko (feat. Loyiso Bala), Zvaringana, Messiah and Bako Rangu / Munenge Muneni.
He has been honoured by the Permican Awards (2015, 2016, 2019) and the INGOMA Awards (2018). He tours four continents and continues to write the songs his country has been singing for thirty years.
